Port Canaveral is a cruise, cargo, and naval port in Brevard County, Florida. Established in 1953, the port has undergone numerous expansions and is now one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. On average, ten ships enter the port each day, including ships from cruise lines such as Carnival, Disney, Royal Caribbean,  and Norwegian. In addition, over 6 million short tons of bulk cargo move through the port each year.

In 2018, Carnival Cruise Lines and the Canaveral Port Authority announced a $163 million project to build a 188,000 square-foot terminal and adjacent 1,800-car garage to host the largest ship in Carnival’s fleet, the Mardi Gras.

The Canaveral Port Authority sought proposals for engineered designs that included stormwater management facilities. Multiple storage systems were evaluated with the Terre Arch concrete detention system selected by RS&H engineers as an efficient product solution with experienced design coming from the Contech Stormwater team.

Due to how the port was expanded over the last 70+ years, backfill/soils were not ideal, and the allowable foundation-bearing pressure had to be evaluated. Contech worked with the geotechnical engineer to ensure the proper design of the Terre Arch system for the site.

Engineers designed three basins; one under the employee parking lot, one under an overflow parking lot, and one under a boat ramp. A total of 612 Terre Arch 26 structures were utilized between the three systems. Terre Arch 26 is a connected 4 arch precast concrete structure providing 277 CF of installed storage and 152 SF infiltration area per structure.

Completing the project on time was critical because of the cruise line’s schedule of the first departure. Contech provided numerous design iterations as the project progressed, and a Contech Field Representative was on-site providing inspection monitoring during installation. The terminal open for use in June 2021 as planned.
