Located in the Phoenix Mountains, the 2,610 foot tall Piestewa Peak is the third highest point in the Phoenix, Arizona area and one of the area's most popular hikes. Formerly known as Squaw Peak, the peak was renamed in 2003 for Army Spc. Lori Piestewa who was the first Native American woman to die in combat and the first female soldier to be killed in action in the Iraq War.

With over 6,000 visitors per week, an improvement project was initiated by the city of Phoenix. Upon completion, new amenities included 22 more parking spots, additional restrooms, a ranger station, picnic areas, and an entry monument. Additionally, a bridge was needed to provide both vehicles and pedestrians with access to the new parking lots and the trailhead. A 105' span x 28' wide Capstone®-style Steadfast® Vehicular Truss Bridge was selected as the best solution for its ability to provide both. The aesthetics of the truss bridge, including the weathered steel finish, was selected to match the rustic desert surroundings and the prefabricated option allowed for a quick construction and installation.

"We had a great experience as a crew and company erecting this bridge," stated Mark Coffey, General Manager at Caliente Ironworks Inc. "We had no production issues or problems and compared to the highly detailed structural steel and welding we do, it was a relatively easy erection project for us. Lastly, we were very impressed with the attitude and ease of working with personnel from Contech Engineered Solutions."

Despite the tight site constraints with steep mountain on either side of the narrow access road, the challenges were met and the project was installed efficiently and within budget.

In early October, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to officially open the bridge and re-open the trailhead to hikers. Members of both the Piestewa family and the Hopi tribe participated in the event.
