Chattanooga’s North Chickamauga Greenway embankment had become extremely unstable due to hydropower generation from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Dam. In an effort to correct the situation, the TVA proposed a bank stabilization project to the City of Chattanooga.
Chickamauga Greenway’s water level and flow direction had changed rapidly throughout the years. Water elevations varied as much as three feet in a short period of time. The 25-ft. embankment’s toe had eroded due to increased volumes of water caused by storms and the increased urbanization and overflow from an existing parking lot. Several large trees and portions of a split rail fence had also fallen into the creek, causing the slope to become even more unstable and threatening the existing parking lot at the top.
The project engineer designed an embankment consisting of three unified slopes. The top two slopes were protected with turf reinforcement matting which also provided an aesthetically pleasing landscape. The City Engineer and TVA used the ArmorFlex Articulated Concrete Block (ACB) mattress system to protect the subgrade against high velocity water flows. Open-cell blocks were selected to allow vegetation to grow and provide the release of hydrostatic pressure from within the embankment.
Since 1998, the ACBs have successfully withstood rainy seasons, water surges and generally every flow-type imaginable. As a result of the ACB installation, the nearby parking lot was protected, and the bank has maintained its stability. With its new look, the site also provides an important benefit to the public - continued use for recreational activities, overall aesthetics, and safe and easy access to the water.
