In the summer of 2019, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) began multiple projects to improve safety and traffic flow on State Route 60, a heavily traveled east-west corridor for commuters and freight through Southern California.
The project was dubbed "the 60 Swarm" due to the numerous projects happening simultaneously along the corridor. These highway improvements were scheduled to begin in the summer of 2019 and continue through the fall of 2021. The 60 Swarm projects also included a SR-60 Bridge Replacement Project and a separate SR-60 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, to name a few others.
The pavement rehabilitation project included the replacement of two outside lanes as well as a surface runoff system to more efficiently handle any rain event.
Caltrans specified steel Slotted Drain™ and slotted corrugated plastic pipe per their standard details. The contractors for the project, J. McLoughlin Engineering Company, had the option to use the steel or the plastic solution. Upon review, the contractor discovered that the slotted corrugated plastic pipe required a large quantity of expensive structural concrete backfill in order to compensate for the reduced pipe strength, while the steel drain required a much lesser quantity of less expensive slurry backfill. Ultimately, the contractor selected a Contech Slotted Drain™ system as both the most cost-efficient as well as structurally sufficient solution.
The site contractor, Joe McLoughlin, commented, “Contech Slotted Drain was chosen for the ease of installation, proven quality, as well as the hard work and dependability of their team.”
Caltrans was extremely satisfied with the Contech Slotted Drain system. Just over 7 miles (38,200 LF) of 18-inch diameter steel Slotted Drain was installed along the highway, efficiently handling the surface runoff along the highway and improving traffic safety. Ultimately, this project rehabilitated the existing pavement with a roadway structure that provided an extended service life and required less maintenance expenditures, minimized maintenance worker exposure and improved ride quality.
