Contech worked with Grant & Associates to design a CON/SPAN® solution that would replace undersized twin 72-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipes with a clear span opening. The project was completed during a 30-day construction schedule prior to the Easter holiday.

Poor soils and high ground water posed additional site challenges, forcing the contractor to use sheet piling with cross bracing to retain the soil and well points to lower the water table. The CON/SPAN ® solution offered time savings and site flexibility to maintain operation of a 24-inch diameter force main, located above the new structure, throughout construction. In addition to installation flexibility, the finished structure offers virtually no maintenance.

After 15 days of road closure for removal of the existing structures and installation of the foundations, the contractor installed the CON/SPAN ® in just one day. To maneuver the units located under the force main and sheet piling bracing, the contractor set the units on 1-inch steel rods in the keyway and rolled the units in place. All other units were set conventionally using a crane. The piling was removed after the construction process was complete, and the roadway was reopened to the public in 28 days.
