Magellan® Wastewater Treatment

A Ground-Breaking System Revolutionizing the Wastewater Treatment Industry

Magellan is a decentralized wastewater treatment plant. This lightweight system is designed with DuroMaxx steel reinforced polyethylene (SRPE) technology and all plastic internal components for on-site treatment of 2,000 to 250,000+ gallons of wastewater per day.

Magellan Wastewater Treatment

The Magellan Advantage

Magellan’s utilization of steel reinforced polyethylene (SRPE) technology and all-plastic internal components allows for a packaged design that provides fast “plug-and-play” installation, along with simple, low-cost operation and maintenance. In addition, Contech provides engineering, installation, commissioning, operator training and system certification services, making it a truly cost-effective solution. The Magellan system uses proven primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment processes to treat various wastewater influent levels. The system is offered in numerous configurations, including single vessel, multiple trai, and containerized. Magellan also qualifies for LEED credits and can be buried to provide improved aesthetics.

Treatment System Configurations

The Magellan system uses a proven process to treat wastewater influent levels from clustered residential, to light industrial, to small municipal flows, and includes the following:

  • Activated sludge/extended aeration (AS/EA)
  • Moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR)
  • Sequencing batch reactor (SBR)
  • Membrane bioreactor (MBR)
  • Variations of other typical conventional processes
  • Denitrification/nutrient removal
  • Tertiary treatment (membrane/UV filtration or chorine disinfection)
  • Reuse and reclamation systems

Ease of Transportation & Installation

  • Magellan is lightweight, promoting easy on-site installation
  • Lightweight systems are more cost-effective to transport
  • No specialized installation equipment required

Ease of Operation & Maintenance

  • SRPE plastic eliminates concerns related to tank maintenance
  • Simplified designs promote easier operation and lower operating costs
  • Life cycles are two and three times longer than comparable steel, concrete and fiberglass systems resulting in substantially lower life cycle costs

Magellan Support Services

With an experienced engineering team, Contech can help you size and design a Magellan system, providing a fast turnaround on even the most challenging projects. We even provide operation and maintenance training and get your system certified.

Magellan Partners

Contech is partnered with the industry’s premier component providers to deliver a turnkey, plug-and-play decentralized wastewater treatment plant. Our partners include:

Residential Wastewater Treatment SystemMagellan is the ideal wastewater solution for rural locations and clustered subdivisions. The small footprint of the Magellan system improves aesthetics, maximizes lot counts and improves property values. Better still, the Magellan system minimizes transportation, installation and maintenance costs.

Commercial / Municipal

Municipal Wastewater Treatment SystemThe Magellan wastewater treatment system provides opportunities for commercial development in areas where a public sewer does not exist. Commercial and municipal facilities including service stations, hotels, shopping centers, office parks, schools and restaurants can now be developed in all areas where demand exists.

Agricultural & Industrial

Agricultural and Industrial Wastewater Treatment SystemMagellan is the perfect solution for agricultural and industrial sites that want to comply with local, state or federal regulations and avoid wastewater surcharge fees. And with options like direct burial or above ground placement, the Magellan system can be placed on almost any site.

Custom Applications

Custom Wastewater Treatment SystemMagellan is a turnkey system that offers mobility and speedy installation. The entire Magellan system can be containerized and shipped anywhere in the world, including military, mining and remote or temporary locations.

SS Credit 3 – Brownfield Redevelopment, 1 Point

Intent – Rehabilitate damaged sites where development is complicated by environmental contamination and reduce pressure on undeveloped land.

Potential contribution: Magellan Wastewater Treatment System

  • The Magellan wastewater treatment system provides watertight storage of wastewater ensuring the protection of groundwater resources and the environment.

SS Credit 5.2 - Site Development, Maximize Open Space, 1 Point

Intent – To provide a high ratio of open space to development footprint to promote biodiversity.

Potential contribution:Magellan Wastewater Treatment System

  • Developments utilizing a Magellan wastewater treatment system permit greater clustering opportunities, resulting in maximum open space potential.

MR Credit 4 – Recycled Content, 1-2 Points

Intent – Increase the demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials. The sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points), based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project.

Potential contribution: Magellan Wastewater Treatment System
  • The Magellan wastewater treatment system is constructed utilizing steel reinforcing ribs having 50-80% recycled content by weight.

WE Credit 1 – Water Efficient Landscaping, 2-4 Points

Intent – Limit or eliminate the use of potable water or other natural surface or subsurface water resources available on or near the project site for landscape irrigation. Reduce by 50% (2 points) or eliminate (4 points).

Potential contribution: Magellan Wastewater Treatment System

  • Disposal options for the clean effluent from the Magellan wastewater treatment system include surface or subsurface distribution, either of which can be used for landscaping irrigation, thus reducing or eliminating the use of potable water for this purpose.

WE Credit 2 – Innovative Wastewater Technologies, 2 Points

Intent – Reduce wastewater generation and potable water demand (50% reduction) while increasing the local aquifer recharge through the use of nonpotable water or on-site wastewater treatment.

Potential contribution: Magellan Wastewater Treatment System
  • The Magellan wastewater treatment system can be configured to include ultraviolet disinfection systems and biological nutrient removal processes to polish the effluent to tertiary treatment standards as needed for recharging aquifers.

WE Credit 3 – Water Efficiency, 2-4 Points

Intent – Further increase water efficiency within buildings to reduce the burden on municipal water supply and wastewater systems. Reduce by 30% (2 points), reduce by 35% (3 points) or reduce by 40% (4 points).

Potential contribution:Magellan Wastewater Treatment System
  • The Magellan wastewater treatment system can be configured to include ultraviolet disinfection systems and biological nutrient removal processes to polish the effluent to tertiary treatment standards. Wastewater treated to this level can be utilized in dual-plumbing buildings for such beneficial uses as toilet and urinal flushing and certain custodial uses.

RP Credit 1 - Regional Priority

Intent - Provide an incentive for the achievement of credits that address geographically-specific environmental priorities.

Potential Contribution: All Contech Products

  • A database of Regional Priority credits and their geographic applicability is available on the USGBC website,
