Red Lion Area School District is a suburban, public district with nine schools that serves approximately 5,700 students from area boroughs and townships in York County, Pennsylvania. The district’s stadium facility and field needed renovation.

Project engineer First Capital Engineering, who designed the project improvements to convert from the existing natural field at Horn Field to a new, synthetic turf that would accommodate football, lacrosse, soccer, baseball and field hockey, was charged with meeting the District’s aggressive schedule. The plansuggested stormwater system would have delayed the project. To meet the tight time frame, as well as approval requirements from municipal, county and state agencies, Contech Engineered Solutions value engineered a Terre Arch™ stormwater management system for this project.

“The biggest advantage the Terre Arch system gave us was installation time,” stated Jim Shaffer, Project Manager with Kinsley Construction, Inc. “We were under a very tight timeline to complete the football field for the first game of the season, and the Terre Arch System reduced installation time by 50% over the original proposed system. Other advantages with great value included heavy duty construction (H-25 loading without additional cover materials), the ability to enter the system for maintenance and that the design fit into the original design footprint.”

Terre Arch is a modular, multi-chambered, precast concrete stormwater detention system engineered for underground installation. Terre Arch provides a lightweight-yet-strong solution for stormwater detention and infiltration. Each Terre Arch four-chamber unit installs quickly, allowing more than 300 cubic feet in stormwater storage in a matter of minutes. This project utilized 92 Terre Arch-26 units and 24 Terre Arch-48 units.

Prior to the installation, the high school football team originally planned to play two of its new season’s home games in a different stadium due to the construction. However, Kinsley Construction was able to finish the project prior to the football team’s first scheduled home game. Despite the project bidding occurring in March 2011, full construction was completed in time for student players and spectators to enjoy the newlyrenovated stadium and field for the season’s first home football game in September.

“We met on-site to conduct a pre-installation meeting with the Terre Arch representatives prior to arrival of the system,” added Shaffer. “We reviewed the delivery schedules, crane set up locations and tips on how to install the system properly since we were using our on-site crew. Everything went as planned and it was a pleasure working with everyone involved.”
