During the summer of 2003, an upscale residential neighborhood in Franklin, Tennessee, recognized the need for protection and restoration of two earthen dams in a highly visible section of their subdivision. The neighborhood association appropriated money for a contractor to reverse the soil erosion around the dams, helping the residents better utilize and experience the many aesthetic and functional benefits of this aquatic feature.
The project was designed to reconstruct areas around the dam face, yet still provide pedestrian access across the dam crossings and improve general maintenance of the dam crests. A total of 4,100 SF of ArmorLoc 4511 hand-placed articulating concrete block revetment was specified and installed along the dam where the water met the face. The block units were placed atop site specific filter fabric and backfilled with light angular limestone rock as a means to reduce unwanted vegetation along the shoreline.
The entire project took two days, including site preparation and final seeding. Four laborers and one piece of heavy equipment were used to complete the project. The association is extremely pleased with the outcome and has found a whole new reason to spend more time around the ponds.
