Georgia-based RISE Real Estate built a 287-unit apartment complex known as Grand and Benson in the Michigan Street corridor in Grand Rapids Michigan. The development consists of two, four-story apartment buildings and a 334-space parking deck.

An underground stormwater detention system was needed per the City of Grand Rapids stormwater ordinance. Engineers from Nederveld Associates were challenged by the extremely tight footprint and elected to place the detention system beneath a courtyard that was surrounded by buildings.

Engineers selected the Terre Arch concrete detention system from Contech. Terre Arch is a modular, multi-chambered, precast concrete stormwater storage system engineered for underground installation. The system was constructed of 24 Terre Arch units, providing 15,600 cf of storage.

Because Terre Arch is modular, installation took less than one day using a crane. A Contech Field Representative attended a preconstruction meeting and was on site to advise the contractor on installation.

Terre Arch was the ideal choice for this application as it was able to fit within the required footprint, provided the needed loading requirements with minimal cover, and offered fast installation with a cost-effective installed price.
