The Unified Government of Kansas City needed a solution for severe erosion occurring adjacent to two sanitary sewer lines that crossed a tributary. One of the sewer lines was suspended on two concrete columns. The other, a clay tile, had been buried beneath the bed of the tributary. The bed had eroded an estimated 6-ft. over the years, thereby exposing the clay tile and causing concern over the general stability of the concrete columns supporting the suspended sewer line.
Several options were explored in an effort to stabilize the exposed sewer lines including riprap, gabions, and A-Jacks. After careful consideration 24-in. A-Jacks were determined to be the best long-term solution.
The tributary banks adjacent to the concrete columns were vertical in spots due to continued erosion of the toe. The designer took advantage of the existing vegetation and only utilized the hard armor to protect the toe, preventing further sluffing of the bank. The clay tile, which was cantilevered across the tributary, was replaced with ductile iron. A-Jacks were then placed on either side of the ductile iron pipe to prevent further exposure along the banks.
