Sustainable Sites
SS Prerequisite 1 - Erosion and Sediment Control Plan

Intent – Reduce pollution from construction activities by controlling soil erosion and waterway sedimentation.

SS Credit 1 – Site Selection

Intent – Avoid the development of inappropriate sites and reduce the environmental impact from the location of a building

SS Credit 2 – Development Density and Community Connectivity

Intent – Channel development to urban areas with existing infrastructure, protect greenfields and preserve habitat and natural resources

SS Credit 3 – Brownfield Redevelopment

Intent – Rehabilitate damaged sites where development is complicated by environmental contamination and reduce pressure on undeveloped land.

SS Credit 4.1 – Alternative/Public Transportation Access

Intent – Reduce pollution and land development impacts from automobile use.

SS Credit 5.1 – Protect or Restore Habitat

Intent – Conserve existing natural areas and restore damaged areas to provide habitat and promote biodiversity.

SS Credit 5.2 – Site Development

Intent – Maximize Open Space

SS Credit 6.1 – Stormwater Quantity Control

Intent – Limit disruption of natural hydrology by reducing impervious cover, increasing on-site infiltration, reducing or eliminating pollution from stormwater runoff and eliminating contaminants.

SS Credit 6.2 – Stormwater Quality Control

Intent – Limit disruption and pollution of natural water flows by managing stormwater runoff.

SS Credit 7.1 – Heat Island Effect - Non-Roof
SS Credit 7.2 – Heat Island Effect - Roof

Intent – Reduce heat islands to minimize impacts on microclimates and habitats.

Material Resources
MR Credit 4 – Recycled Content

Intent – Increase the demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials. The sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points), based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project.

MR Credit 5.1 – Regional Materials

Intent – Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured locally to a job site in hopes to reduce the environmental impact that would result from transporting these goods. Products manufactured, extracted and recycled within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points), based on cost of the total materials value.

Water Efficiency
WE Credit 1 – Water Efficient Landscaping

Intent – Limit or eliminate the use of potable water or other natural surface or subsurface water resources available on or near the project site for landscape irrigation. Reduce by 50% (2 points) or eliminate (4 points).

WE Credit 2 – Innovative Wastewater Technologies

Intent – Reduce wastewater generation and potable water demand (50% reduction) while increasing the local aquifer recharge through the use of nonpotable water or on-site wastewater treatment

WE Credit 3 – Water Efficiency

Intent – Further increase water efficiency within buildings to reduce the burden on municipal water supply and wastewater systems. Reduce by 30% (2 points), reduce by 35% (3 points) or reduce by 40% (4 points).

Innovation In Design
ID Credit 1 – Innovation in Design

Intent – Provide design teams and projects the opportunity to achieve exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED Green Building Rating System and/or innovative performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by the LEED Green Building Rating System.

Regional Priorities
RP Credit 1 – Regional Priority

Intent - Provide an incentive for the achievement of credits that address geographically-specific environmental priorities. A database of Regional Priority credits and their geographic applicability is available on the USGBC website,USGBC.org.

LEED Rating System

Developments that meet or exceed LEED performance benchmarks are awarded points by the USGBC after the project is completed. The number of points earned determines the level of LEED certification the project receives (Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum).

LEED Certification

Certification by LEED can help builders and developers receive more lucrative projects, financial incentives and credits, and significant acknowledgments for their efforts.

US Green Building Council

The USGBC is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable design and construction of buildings. The USGBC has developed the LEED® Green Building Rating System which establishes voluntary performance standards in five areas: sustainable site development, material and resource selection, water savings, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality.
